Our Mission Statement

Jesus challenged the church when He gave the Great Commission: "Go and make
disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded."

Prior to the inception of the Followers of Christ Baptist Church Family September 5, 1979 at 7:00 PM thirteen people gathered for Prayer at the home of Sister Oshia Gaines, 1401 Garland Drive, Oklahoma City, OK. At the conclusion of prayer session, Brother James Gray Sr.(visitor) gave his life to Christ.

On September 7th Connie Davis ( a young woman who was interested in what was going on) asked her father, Mr. Sammie Davis (owner of McKay-Davis Funeral Home) if we could use the chapel for worship on Sunday mornings.    He gladly consented.

Sunday, September 9th the group met at the funeral home for worship.  There were sixty people in attendance for Sunday School and the offering was $36.60.  Morning worship attendance was 102 persons and the offering was $642.67.  Pastor Fisher preached from the subject entitled “We must go on for the sake of Jesus”.  It was taken from John 6:66-69. Six people accepted Christ as their personal Saviour.

On Sunday, September 16th worship service was again held at the McKay-Davis Funeral Home Chapel. As the week progressed, the group decided they wanted to organize a church and continue to worship together.  Plans to organize were set for September 19, 1979.  Reverend Eric Mayes, Jr., Pastor of Unity Baptist Church,  Reverend Morris Curry, Sr., (deceased), Pastor of Faith Memorial Baptist Church

and Reverend E. R. Neal (deceased) Pastor of Mount Olive Baptist Church were present with the organizing committee that night.  Letters granting authority for the committee to proceed were presented by Sister Emma Geretta, Sister Oshia Gaines (deceased), Brother Robert Davis (deceased), Sister Cora Lyons (deceased), Sister Neaner Oliver (deceased), Sister Emma Wilson, Sister Marie Robinson (deceased);

all former members of Prospect Baptist Church of Oklahoma City. Immediately following the organizational meeting an invitation for Church membership was given and 61 persons joined the newly formed

Church. Three names for the church were offered for discussion:

      (1) God’s Christian Fellowship, (2) Sardis Baptist Church,

      (3) Followers of Christ Baptist Church.  After a period of discussion,

It was voted unanimously to use the name Followers of Christ Baptist church.

It was also a unanimous choice to call Reverend C. D. Fisher, Jr .

as Pastor of the church.

September 24, 1979 a Charter was obtained for church operation and recognition from the State of Oklahoma.  October 1, 1979 Pastor Fisher contacted the Oklahoma Baptist State Convention to see if they
desired to sell the property at 1125 NE 36th Street.  November 1, 1979 a contract for purchase was drawn up between the Pastor, members of the Followers of Christ Baptist Church and the officers of the Oklahoma
Baptist State Convention.  Though the property and building was ours by contract, the Oklahoma School of
Religion and Park Estates Senior Citizens groups were allowed to occupy portions of the building until they
could find other places for operation.  During their stay we scheduled our meetings around them.  We would
come in on Saturday evenings and take down their tables and put up our folding chairs for Sunday Worship.
After worship on Sunday evenings we would fold our chairs and put up the tables again for the scheduled
activities.

September 1981 the debt to the Oklahoma Baptist State Convention was paid in full with pledges from members and proceeds from a cookbook which the WMU had compiled and sold. The same month, Sunday
September 27th we held a mortgage burning ceremony.

The Lord continued to bless our church over the years.  There have been numerous renovations which
included the completion of the sanctuary in 1982 with a dedication service held with worship and praise to the
Lord complemented by a musical presented by the choir.

1983 remodeling began in the old building.  The kitchen was completely rebuilt and furnished, the
Pastor’s study was equipped with a shower and the fellowship hall received new carpet and air condition.

By 1984 the membership was growing rapidly and more of Pastor Fisher’s time was needed to meet
the needs of the people.  The congregation decided to compensate his salary and retire him from his position
as Chaplain at Children’s Hospital of Oklahoma City.

From 1986 – 1996 the church parking lot was paved, the ladies lounge underwent renovation, an alarm
system was installed, the church van was purchased to accommodate members who needed transportation to
and from church, a new display sign was bought to advertise the activities of the church and the nursery
underwent redecorating.

Church members were saddened in 1997 when Pastor Fisher, who had served faithfully over the 18
years passed after a brief illness.

Pastor Fisher had tirelessly worked in the ministry in which he was called, he was a true bond-servant
of Jesus Christ.  He visited the sick, taught the imprisoned, was a giver; an encourager, a eminent teacher of
the Word and a great leader.  The church was also blessed with his talents as a writer. He wrote the Sunday
School lessons and also wrote a book entitled, “Gospel in the Wilderness Experience” with the help of Sister
Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher and Sister Marilyn Buckner.  We were truly blessed with this Servant of
God.

October 11, 1998 the Fellowship Hall was dedicated and named the C. D. FISHER FELLOWSHIP HALL.
Reverend Leonard Fisher of Altadena, California conducted the dedicatory services.

Pastor Arthur Crawford received his calling at Followers of Christ Baptist Church. Shortly thereafter he was
called as Pastor to the Mount Olive Baptist Church in Newkirk, Oklahoma and was there for 11 months. He then
went into the prison ministry for 8 years, preaching and teaching those incarcerated. In 1994 he became
co-pastor and served until 1997.  On May 3, 1998 he was selected as Pastor of Followers of Christ.  Under his leadership we
were able to build on the foundation that was laid by Pastor Fisher. He served until January
2008.

Renovations to the church continued from 2000 to the present with Phase I and Phase II remodeling.

June 10, 2009 the Followers of Christ Baptist Church Called Pastor Don R. Horton, Sr. as the pastor and
his installation was August 30th.  He is a profound preacher, teacher and leader.  Pastor Horton’s objectives
are to preach and teach the Gospel of Christ to the saved and unsaved, serve as spiritual advisor to all those
in his fold and win lost souls to Christ
.

Reverend Don Horton, Sr. was born in Gadsden, Alabama and is a graduate of the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where he received a B.S. degree.  In addition, he is a graduate of the C.H. Mason Christian Academy of Oklahoma City; he received his Ministerial license in 1996 and his ordination in 2003.
